Temporary Works & Management

With more than 21 years of experience in temporary works engineering, we understand how site-based professionals work tirelessly to achieve their cost, quality and time targets while focusing on the safety of others. Our vision was to create a system to help organise and simplify the processes that govern temporary works while complying with British standard BS5975:2019.

Our dedication to innovation and excellence led us to create the unique I-Works web portal. The only system of its kind, I-Works is an online program and app designed to streamline the processes that temporary works coordinators and temporary works supervisors use in their project management. Using our ingenious program, site workers can use a computer, a tablet or even a mobile phone to establish design briefs in real time in only 3-5 minutes. All the designs are saved on a web-based cloud, enabling the supervisors, engineers and other on-site construction professionals to access the drawings and design notes at any time live while they are on site.

The I-Works web application enables engineers and temporary works supervisors to complete and upload permits to load and unload through their phone or other device. They can even add photos of the completed works, so directors and managers can access them at their own convenience from files on cloud-based servers to ensure the works have been executed correctly.

In addition to permits, the I-Works portal also manages scaffolding systems. Site workers can complete an online scaffolding checklist using a personal device like a tablet or mobile phone, leaving notes and photos when required. Once the temporary works permit is complete, the app sends an automatic notification to the temporary works co-ordinator every 7 days as a reminder to renew the permit. At the end of the job, the temporary works are removed from their location and the project is closed on the app.

A unique QR code will be provided for each site where it will be presented at the completed temporary works (similar to a Scaff tag). Once the QR code is scanned by a device, the worker will be able to access the entire flow of information for the project from the start of the design brief process. This includes receiving designs and DCC, accessing photos of the completed works and monitoring the site compliance and safety. Once the temporary works are removed, the project is closed.

As members of the temporary works forum, City Temporary Works is fully committed to creative innovation to achieve the most up-to-date, cutting-edge temporary works and construction methods in our industry, constantly promoting the safest and best practices.

We consistently seek ways to improve the management and application of temporary works for groundworks, concrete frames, slipform, jump-forms, top-down construction and tunnelling projects. In support of this objective, we developed our digital Temporary Works Management Registrar that enables the management of complex temporary works designs alongside bespoke construction practices.

Our exclusive I-Works temporary works process program is a completely centrally-managed application. It uses technology developed in-house by our talented designers and engineers in conjunction with our app development team. The software was created by bringing together the requirements of site, temporary works management and our own years of experience in project development. The I-Works web portal was specifically devised to assist qualified temporary works site co-ordinators to convey design requirements ahead of required project schedules using the efficiencies permitted by app technology.

At the heart of I-Works technology is a tracking and notification system referencing a database-fed registrar that aligns in real time to the most current changes in the client’s design brief with what is on the ground on site and what has been requested. It is a live stream temporary works support system that is used throughout the life of the project.

Following the codes of practice and the guidelines of BS5975, the software enables a site’s temporary works co-ordinator to list all the temporary works relevant to each site. By populating the site-specific temporary works design brief forms within I-Works, many multiple design scenarios are covered. Once a design brief is submitted, the system allocates the temporary works request, end date and notification start dates are established and the tracking system of the temporary works design process is initiated.

The I-Works system will ensure the complete lifecycle of the temporary works designs remains on one digital master register, in line with the requirements of the British standard. The automatic tracking notification system adheres to the temporary works protocol from the start of the design brief, followed by the design and design check certificates, to the completion of the permits to load and off load. The design briefs are supported with photos and descriptions of the assembled temporary works.

City Temporary Works collaborates closely with qualified, experienced and highly competent temporary works design subcontractors who are specialists in their field. The I-Works app guarantees and maintains the quality of the temporary works design. Each design is CAT1 to CAT3 checked (for complex designs), and a check certificate is issued by our temporary works designers specific to the level of complexity. The process is completed by our in-house temporary works department, who execute a final check of the process and methodology before issuing the build design to site.

All City Temporary Works co-ordinators and supervisors are trained through our in-house temporary works department on how to maintain and follow the BS5975 standard as well as individual companies’ bespoke procedures. This ensures we maintain the highest standards in the quality of design and implementation of the temporary works on each site, leading to a safer working environment.
